Tradition copper wires use electrical signals, or pulses, to transmit information. A fiber optic cable uses light pulses to transmit information from one end of the cable to the other. Fiber optic cables can either be Single Mode fiber or Multi Mode fiber. Single mode fiber cables will give you a high transfer speed over longer distances while Multi Mode fiber cables will give you a high transfer speed over shorter distances. Fiber optic cables are more expensive then their copper wire counter parts. Because of this fiber optic cables are normally used in military or large corporations. Although with the push to have faster communcations such as home Internet, fiber optic lines are starting to work their way in to the consumer market.
